我明白你的意思,但我的意思是,英语中,助动词和动词之间不可能毫无限制关系,这是印欧语常见的现象。我想问的是,即使cannot修饰for a long time to come,但它也不可能和骨干动词possess毫无牵连(文法上的要求),也就是说必须同时 ...

GnuDoyng has done a great job.

What Douglas meant was that the Vernacular was not likely to become an "independent language" by name in a short time, so if you wanted to be counted a scholar, you still needed to study the characters. Remember this is 19th century English and that's also why you will see "eight or ten millions".

For abbreviations or acronyms, I usually go to http://www.acronymfinder.com.

Finally, maybe we should rephrase "at home" as "in England" or "in Scotland" to make it clearer.

(可能指的是《Anglo-Chinese Manual With Romanized Colloquial in the Amoy Dialect》一書,GnuDoyng譯注)
The name of MacGowan's book can be found on page 607, Manual of Amoy Colloquial.

" In like manner the language which for want of a better name we may call the Amoy vernacular or spoken language, contains within itself several dialects, especially those of chang-chew, Chin-chew, Tung-an, and of Amoy itself."
"我們應該按照類似的方式為語言尋找更合適的名稱,因此,我們可以稱這種語言為廈門土白或是廈門口語。在該語言內部就可以找到許多真正的方言,尤其是漳州話、泉州話、同安話,以及廈門話本身。"

In the context, "want" should mean "lack".

I think Douglas is saying that because the language lacks  a formal name, we will refer to it awkwardly as Amoy vernacular or spoken language,
